Phthalates

Phthalates are a family of ingredients that have historically been widely used in consumer products to make plastics less brittle and more durable, and to help fragrances last longer. There are different types of phthalates, some of which can still be found in everyday products such as lotions, deodorants, cosmetics, cleaning products, and plastic packaging.
Are there concerns associated with phthalates?
Different classes of phthalates have different safety profiles. Studies have shown that certain phthalates, such as di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), can cause reproductive and developmental effects, impacting fertility and interfering with hormone systems. Because of this, they have been restricted or banned in childcare products and cosmetics in the United States, European Union and Canada. Other phthalates, such as diethyl phthalate (DEP), have not clearly been shown to cause these effects and are not included in the restrictions or bans set by authorities.
Phthalates may enter the environment from manufacturing or be released from packaging over time. They have been detected in surface water, which can impact aquatic life as some phthalates have been shown to cause endocrine disrupting effects in fish. While most phthalates biodegrade in water, they can bind to soil and sediment, which makes them last longer in the environment.
SC Johnson’s approach:
We’ve chosen not to use phthalates in our product formulas, even those still permitted by regulators. We removed phthalates from our approved fragrance palette and work closely with our fragrance houses to ensure they’re no longer used in our scents. Additionally, we do not allow packaging with intentionally added phthalates. In some cases, small amounts of phthalates can be introduced into our packaging components due to the use of recycled materials. Some regions like the EU require manufacturers and importers to notify authorities of products containing hazardous substances like phthalates, helping to minimize their presence in recycled materials.
