Penny Blossom Charms | Family Economics

I am always looking for cute and inexpensive gifts to use for bridal parties, birthday presents and other last-minute gifts. Lately, this simple and beautiful jewelry project has been my go to. It’s not only fun to make, but it is perfect for all sorts of different occasions.

For each penny blossom charm, you will need:

•   Either a small coin, preferably a penny, or a metal disk
•   Jewelry hole press or power drill
•   Clear, dimensional embossing powder such as Amazing Glaze Embossing Powder
•   Small, fabric flower with stamen (i.e. vintage velvet millinery posies or small silk flowers)
     o   The center stamen can be replaced with a bead or sequin
     o   Trim away any stems from the flower
•   Flat piece of cork or wood, cut smaller than the coin to use as a riser
     o   The riser allows the melted glaze to run off the coin and into the hole, keeping the glazed coin from sticking to the pan
•   Baking pan and pan liner
•   Toaster oven or standard oven

To Make:

1. Press, punch or drill a small hole into the top of the coin. If you plan to connect charms or add beads to the final piece, drill another hole into the bottom of the coin.

2. Place the coin on top of the small riser.

3. Place the coin and riser onto a lined baking pan.

4. Cover the penny with a layer of embossing powder.

5. Bake until the powder melts completely clear.

6. Remove from oven. Center the flower petal over the charm and place into the melted glaze. Do this while the glaze is still warm.

7. Cover the flower with more embossing powder and place the coin back into the oven until powder becomes clear.

8. Remove from oven and cool.

9. Use metal jump rings to hang the charm from a chain, beaded necklace, bracelet, or to connect several charms together.
