A More Transparent World

Simply put, safety first. To that end, SC Johnson believes that science shines a clear light on the impacts of ingredients.
When you choose an SC Johnson product, you can trust that it’s developed using the highest ingredient safety standards.  We are passionate about researching the ingredients we choose to use and making the body of science we follow understandable and accessible to consumers. That way, when you check the label or our website about a product, it’s clear why we say it is safe for you and your family, or it’s an environmentally friendly choice.

SC Johnson’s Greenlist™ Screening Process

We choose the ingredients we use carefully

Every ingredient in every SC Johnson product goes through our thorough screening process to determine its potential impact on human health and the environment. Known as SC Johnson’s Greenlist™, this process is a science-based, four-step evaluation grounded in best-in-class data collection and driven by our commitment to continually improve our products. If an ingredient is flagged, it undergoes further assessment to determine if it can be used safely in our products before being placed on our “not allowable” list.

We ask: could this ingredient cause...

1

Longer-term human health effects?

Our data source include:

  • California Proposition 65
  • World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer monographs

Of the very few that are flagged, we set a safety factor over a thousand times lower than the lowest level that could impact human health or the environment.

2

Longer-term environmental effects?

Our data sources include:

  • European Chemical Agency (ECHA)
  • ECHA’s Substances of Very High Concern list
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s PBT Profiler and criteria for PBT (Persistence, Bioaccumulation, and Toxicity) assessment

Any indication of being a PBT will cause an ingredient to be flagged.

3

Immediate short-term human health or environmental effects?

This step looks at potential short-term effects like skin irritation or the release of volatile organic compounds into the air.

Our data sources include:

  • Supplier Safety Data Sheets
  • U.S. National Institutes of Health’s TOXNET
  • Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development guidelines.

4

An allergic reaction?

We use a science-based, externally valid process for skin allergen identification and transparency.

Flagged ingredients are used only in amounts that are unlikely to cause issues.
