Building Effective Handwashing Solutions and to Help Create a Healthier World
Global Handwashing Day may be recognized on October 15, but at SC Johnson we believe handwashing, and a commitment to Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) programs, is a key part of a better, healthier world – and something we support throughout the year and around the globe.
Why do we focus on handwashing? Because families can help protect their health by practicing regular, effective handwashing, and we can help reduce the spread of illness and disease by working with partners to increase access to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities and educating people on the importance of handwashing.
We've all washed our hands a lot in the past few years, but getting a refresher on how to do it effectively never hurts.
Follow these simple steps from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when washing your hands to help stop the spread of germs:
- Using clean water, warm or cold, wet your hands and apply soap.
- Rub your palms together, continually, covering the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
- Continue to scrub for at least 20 seconds, which equals about the same time it will take you to sing “Happy Birthday” twice from beginning to end.
- Rinse your hands under clean, running water, removing all the soap suds.
- Dry your hands using a clean towel, paper napkin or air dry them.
In 2023, we teamed up with Liverpool Football Club to kick off a new partnership. The team and SC Johnson will upcycle plastic bottles from Anfield Stadium with a goal of reducing club waste by 10% this season, and as LFC’s Official Cleaning and Disinfectant Partner, SC Johnson provides the soaps and hand sanitizers found throughout the stadium.
We’ve partnered with Habit for Humanity chapters globally to provide access and proper WASH facilities for hundreds of facilities across Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong.
And also in Vietnam and Thailand, we work with local organizations to refurbish school facilities to build up classrooms as well as WASH facilities to help students learn more about, and practice, good hand hygiene through handwashing.
Through SC Johnson Professional, we are a Steering Committee member of The Global Handwashing Partnership, which highlights the importance of access to clean water and soap. Global Handwashing Day advocates for handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives, particularly in areas of the world that don’t have access to clean water and soap.
