RACINE, Wis., Dec. 4, 2017 – SC Johnson today announced a donation of $35,000 to the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network (Root-Pike WIN). The donation will support Root-Pike WIN’s restoration projects, with the goal of significantly reducing runoff pollution, flooding issues, and habitat degradation that threaten area streams and Lake Michigan.

“Issues like soil erosion and storm water runoff have to be addressed because clean water is essential so communities and the environment can thrive,” said Kelly M. Semrau, Senior Vice President – Global Corporate Affairs, Communication & Sustainability at SC Johnson. “We partner with Root-Pike WIN to ensure that the health our area’s major watersheds will continue to improve.”

A watershed is an area of land where surface water from yards and farm fields drain into a common location. In Racine County, some of the major watersheds are Lake Michigan, the Root River, the Pike River and the Wind Point Watershed.

“Protecting our community’s watersheds is a collective effort,” said Dave Giordano, Executive Director at Root-Pike WIN. “We appreciate SC Johnson’s continued support of Root-Pike WIN’s plan to protect, restore and sustain our local watersheds, which will ultimately have a significant impact on water quality for our area.”

SC Johnson has supported Root-Pike WIN with a total of $300,000 since 2006. One project the Root-Pike WIN is leading is a ravine and wetland restoration for the Colonial Park Ravine of the Root River in Racine. Currently, there are issues with streambank erosion, pollutants from storm water runoff and invasive plant species. In 2018, Root-Pike WIN will work to restore the ravine and wetland by reducing sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus from flowing into the Root River, while planting native vegetation and increasing fish spawning grounds.

In the last 18 months, Root-Pike WIN has advanced more than 40 projects and recommendations in the watershed restoration plans. More than $1.5 million in project implementation funding has also been secured.

SC Johnson works to make lives better in the communities in which it does business. Since 1937, the company has given 5 percent of all pretax profits to charities.
