SC Johnson Named as a 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Company by Shanghai Pudong Government

Company Recognized for Commitment to Employee Rights, Sustainability, Integrity and Social Harmony

Feb. 22, 2012, Racine, Wis., - Shanghai Johnson, SC Johnson’s China subsidiary, has been named by the Shanghai Pudong Government as a 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Company. The company was one of 21 renewal companies to receive the recognition in 2011 and was one of the first 16 companies to be recognized as a CSR company in 2009.

“SC Johnson is honored by this recognition, but more important is the fact that the Shanghai Pudong Government is bringing awareness to the importance of doing the right thing for people and the planet through these awards,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson. “As a family company, we have built our business on these types of values and the greater good is at the core of everything we do.”

The award is part of an ongoing effort by the Chinese government to promote Corporate Social Responsibility, including building a CSR system in Pudong and certifying CSR companies. Companies are evaluated by a third-party based on their 2011 achievements in four areas: employee rights, sustainability, integrity and social harmony. Shanghai Johnson demonstrated continuous efforts and improvements in all categories over the past two years, and ranked favorably in each of the 67 criteria that were assessed.

In operation since 1987, Shanghai Johnson is SC Johnson’s China subsidiary. The company is a market leader in the area of home cleaning, air care, and pest control and markets well-known brands including Mr. Muscle®, Raid®, Glade®, OFF!®, Pledge®, and more in China. Shanghai Johnson’s commitment to the environment and community runs deep and includes the following:

• Recognized in the top 10 out of 1,300 companies as a Pudong Four-Star Sustainability Company by the Jin Qiao city government’s “Build an Eco Industrial Zone” project
• Received the Walmart Best Sustainable Packaging Award for its work around environmentally stable packaging
• Implemented Pudong’s first solar water heating system for use in manufacturing to maximize use of renewable resources. The power generated is the equivalent to nearly 300 tons of city steam usage each year
• Continued sponsorship and educational efforts around sustainability through the Shanghai Johnson Environmental Education Fund, which the company helped establish in 1994; this year the number of schools in the program increased from 250 to 360
• Sponsored students in Shanghai through Project Sunrise, a program that improves the educational opportunities for both high school and college for underprivileged students
• Volunteered and knitted over 200 scarves which were sent to the elder community in support of Project Warm Scarf

“We are truly honored to be recognized by the Shanghai Pudong Government for our efforts around Corporate Social Responsibility,” said James Wong, Managing Director – Shanghai Johnson. “The recognition is a testament of the efforts of the entire Shanghai Johnson team, who is committed to working together as a family to strengthen our local community.”

A 360 Degree Approach to Sustainability
Across the globe, SC Johnson takes a 360 degree approach to sustainability. The company works every day to create winning products, use fewer resources, ensure less waste and serve the greater good. Giving back to the communities in which it does business is a priority and throughout its history, SC Johnson has contributed to community and charitable efforts in the belief that the company cannot be healthy on the inside unless the communities outside are healthy, too.  Five percent of pre-tax profits go to corporate giving – nearly four times the corporate average. At the subsidiary level:

• Companies aim to contribute up to two percent of pre-tax profits
• General Managers are encouraged to hold at least one board-level membership with a major local community nonprofit organization
• At least one significant employee volunteer effort is held in the community each year
