Saving Energy

Making green choices means more than simply buying energy efficient appliances or recycling the newspaper. Those are great steps! But it's also about recognizing how much we already have, and how to make the most of it.

Every year, millions of plastic trigger bottles end up in landfills. Concentrated refills use less packaging, decrease shipping impacts and reduce waste. Small green choices can make a big difference.

DIY Memorial Day Crafts and Treats

By Melissa

Although the first official day of summer isn’t until June, the summer season kicks off with the Memorial Day weekend festivities. Skip the pre-made red, white and blue treats and decorations and enlist your children’s help to make your own patriotic party products.

Star Shaped Snacks
Make your own variety of star-shaped red, white or blue treats. I love silicone molds because they can be used for baked treats as well as snacks that need to set in the refrigerator. The molds are great for making homemade crisped rice treats, brownies, granola bars or even mini-cheesecakes.

Red, White and Blue Parfait
Yogurt parfaits are popular in our house and it’s a fun activity to make them as family. Simply alternate layers of vanilla yogurt (we prefer a nice creamy Greek yogurt) with fresh blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. These kid and adult-friendly Memorial Day themed desserts can be made in advance and stored in your refrigerator until your holiday party begins.

Confetti
I admit, my daughter and I love confetti. Even a Memorial Day party deserves a little holiday-themed confetti so why not make your own. This is the perfect time to repurpose your children’s artwork from school or newspapers in your recycling bin into confetti.

Crafts
Decorate your house for your Memorial Day party with items you and your children make together. You can easily turn an oatmeal box into a windsock, make a star wreath out of construction paper and a paper plate and make flag party favors out of craft sticks. These are just a few of the dozens of ideas listed on one of my favorite holiday-themed craft site: Enchanted Learning.

What’s your favorite red, white and blue snack or craft?
