Save On Home Remodeling | Family Economics

By Andrea

Home remodeling can be extremely expensive. And it's not something you want to skimp on because quality since it affects your home's value. Finding ways to cut on costs of remodeling is possible.

Several years ago, we installed new ceramic tile in our kitchen. We didn’t have experience with installing tile; however, we had a friend who did. We purchased our tile at a close-out store and got it at a fraction of the cost compared to a large home remodeling retailer.

Another project we completed was adding new baseboards. We did hire someone for this project since we didn’t have the necessary tools to even begin this project. Plus, using a miter saw wasn't something we had time to tackle. For this project, we were able to save on our supplies by purchasing through another home discount store that is open to the public, but mostly known by contractors.

Online resale outlets are another great place to consider when looking for discounted supplies. There are several locations in the U.S. and Canada and they sell used and surplus building materials at a great discount.

Do you have other tips to save even more on home remodeling? I would love to hear your suggestions since I want to save as much as possible!

Heather, great suggestion to learn it too! My husband has learned a lot that way and it certainly has helped save some as well. Thanks for commenting!! Laura, great tip to purchase discount gift cards from Plastic Jungle as well. Thanks for sharing that one!

Those all are great ideas Andrea! We our fortunate enough to have friends who have great tools and resources. We help them out and they help us. For example, my husband spent two weekends helping a friend drywall. He learned how to do it and our friends share their equipment with us. Another thing, my husbands college buddies get together every summer for a weekend and take turn going "jobs" at each person's house. They socialize, drink beer at night and get a project done. One summer they roofed our house, last summer was someone else's turn.

For a big project, I bought Lowes gift cards from Plastic Jungles ahead of time, that will save you 7-9%.
