White and Clear Household Items | Family Economics

By Cathe

Although we have a colorfully decorated house, I tend to favor white or neutral colored cabinets, walls and flooring to act as a blank canvas to the colorful furniture, accessories and collections we have. There are a few other things in our home I prefer in white or clear only.

Dishes
I love, love, love the look of white dishes; they don’t even have to match. Our plates and bowls are stacked on open shelving in our kitchen and although the dishes aren’t all the same brand, style or age, they coordinate beautifully. I even have a nice collection of vintage white ironstone pitchers on the out-of-reach top shelf.

Drinking Glasses
I prefer clear drinking glasses, whether actual glass or acrylic. There’s something naturally clean looking about a cupboard full of crisp and clean tumblers. Having them clear also makes it easier to notice areas that the dishwasher missed when cleaning.

Towels
I only purchase white bath towels. Since there’s no color, they never fade. White towels can be bleached without concern of color change and should they ever begin to dull, I use old-fashioned bluing agent in the wash to perk them right up. Even with a colorful bathroom, white towels still give a spa look and feel.

Do you favor any white or clear things in your home, or do you have a favorite color you use?

Cathe, this is so odd because I have the same white dish assortment and towels and also clear glass tumblers for beverages. Most of mine are antique except the towels. I love restaurant china because it's so durable and comes in great shapes like oval and square.

I do all these things, too! I've had white everyday dishes for years. I've collected solid color serving dishes for holidays: red and green for Christmas, pastels for easter, silver and gold metalic for New Year, etc. Now, it's easy to mix and match to color coordinate parties or special events.

Thanks for the tip, I tend to only buy white towels too and some are looking dingy, so hopefully I can find the bluing in Canada. White dishes are great so you can show off beautifully prepared food on them better than on patterned plates, that's one reason I have them. Thanks for your awesome blogging Cathe, I always look forward to what you have for us.
