Frugal Summer Fun | Family Economics
School's out for the summer, and children everywhere are celebrating! I love the relaxed days of summer. There are no school schedules or extracurricular activities to work around, and I feel like we can slow down and enjoy each other as a family. At the same time, I know from experience that without some planned activities, kids get bored and restless, and that's never a good thing for mom!
Fortunately, summer is a great time for some good clean frugal fun! The weather is perfect for playing outside and even when it's not, there are still ways to have fun during the summer. Here are a few frugal ideas to help you keep the kids busy this summer.
• Go to the park. Picnics are a great opportunity to enjoy the sunshine. Pack a lunch and take some sports equipment along. If there's a water park nearby, enjoy a good book under a tree, while the kids splash in the water structure. Let your kids run until they're tired. You'll all sleep well that night.
• Watch a movie. Cheap (or free) movies abound in the summertime. In my area, several communities show free movies in the park on Friday and Saturday nights. Even if your community doesn't offer movies in the park, several national theater chains offer discounted matinees once a week for kids. It's a great way to escape the summer heat!
• Go bowling. Grab another family and take the kids bowling. Kids love it, and this year bowling alleys across the country are participating in the Kids Bowl Free program. Participating bowling alleys are offering two free games per child every day this summer. Family passes for the adults are available at reasonable prices, too.
• Take up letterboxing. Letterboxing is a fun free treasure hunt for the whole family. All you need is a journal, an inkpad and a rubber stamp. Just check for clues in your area at letterboxing.org, find the box, and stamp your journal! There are letterboxes hidden all over the country, so anyone can participate!
Whatever your family's interests, make sure you have some organized activities in your summer plans. You'll make some great memories to treasure forever.
